PGA Golf and College Football Mixed?
- Updated: August 19, 2013
Golf’s Tour Championship at East Lake Country Club in Atlanta and college football will be intertwined at this year’s event. In an attempt to stimulate publicity and ticket sales, event sponsors will offer a college football type tailgate experience at golf’s season-ending championship September 19-22.
The tournament will have a 300-person hospitality tent set up between the 10th green and 11th tee that will include covered open-air seating, TVs, tailgate style games and activities, and the opportunity to meet and mingle with former college football coaches and players and golfers.
Players and fans are also encouraged to wear the colors and gear of their favorite teams on Friday, September 20.
“Can’t decide between a weekend of golf or college football? … Do BOTH!” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO. “We want fans to have a chance to celebrate their passion for college football and experience the TOUR Championship in the same way they spend a college football Saturday by supporting their alma maters. It’s the best of both worlds and the beginning of a passionate new tradition of integrating golf and college football.”
The Tour Championship has been a difficult sell in Atlanta most years. September means college football in Atlanta and whether it is the Braves, golf or even the Falcons, it is always tough for other sports teams and activities to compete. Be interesting to see if this marketing campaign gains traction for the Tour Championship.
