Kaepernick Soaring In Popularity
- Updated: July 20, 2013
San Francisco 49er QB Colin Kaepernick may not have thrown the football particularly well in the Super Bowl, but his jersey sales are doing real well.
Kaepernick’s jersey passed Robert Griffin III to become the number one selling NFL jersey on NFLShop.com from April 1 through June 30.
Drafted in the second round of the 2011 draft, Kaepernick was a name not too many NFL fans knew going into last season. His anonymity wasn’t hurt by the fact that he played his college ball at Nevada.
But when starter Alex Smith went down in week 10, Kaepernick took over and turned Smith into an NFL version of Wally Pipp. Kaepernick was good in the regular season, but stepped it up a couple notches in the playoffs. He accumulated over 1,000 total yards in the three playoff games and tossed seven touchdowns.
Not only did Kaepernick bypass Robert Griffin III, Seattle’s Russell Wilson did the same, landing in second place in jersey sales. All three are quarterbacks who are equally adept running as well as throwing the football. Have the straight dropback QBs like Manning and Brady become boring? Kind of looks that way.
No Super Bowl champion QB, Joe Flacco, in the top three, either.
