McCann Putting Up Journeyman Numbers
- Updated: April 29, 2014
Yankees catcher Brian McCann has found out this season that the American League is not the National League. McCann is hitting only .235 so far this season with a .279 on-base-percentage and .370 slugging percentage.
Not much of a return yet on the $18 million per year that the Yankees signed the ex-Atlanta Braves player.
What stands out with McCann’s numbers, is only four walks in 81 at bats, that is a 4.9% walk rate. In his career, McCann has averaged 9.4%. In other words, he is being impatient at the plate. If he doesn’t become more productive, Yankees fans will become impatient with him.
It isn’t like McCann was signed by a team that expects him to carry a huge load in the middle of the line-up with no protection around him. The Yankees have quality sticks up and down the batting order, McCann is just expected to do his normal thing.
If he doesn’t start hitting soon, McCann will find out that New York is not the soft Atlanta media market.
