Michelle Wie Actually Won
- Updated: April 21, 2014
Michelle Wie ended a dry spell by winning at the LPGA Lotte Championship this past weekend. The win was Wie’s first since spring 2012.
When Wie was a teenager she was touted as having the potential to be the Tiger Woods of women’s golf. She even played in some PGA events against the best players in the world.
Wie is now 24 years old and is a good, but not a great women’s golfer. She’s a long ways away from fulfilling the promise that she showed when she qualified for an LPGA event at 12 years old. Wie has been so off the radar, I even forgot about her until seeing that she actually won a tournament.
“The last couple of years, I put so much pressure on myself to win. I knew I really wanted to play well. But this week I said I’m going to go out there and put no expectations on myself and have fun. And I think I did that,” Wie said after winning.
We will most likely never see Wie in a men’s event again, but perhaps she can now start challenging as the best women’s golfer in the world. The sports could sure use her, who cares about women’s golf anymore?
When I think of women’s golf, I think of all the great Korean golfers whose names I can’t pronounce and Paul Creamer in her cute little pink outfits. That’s about it. Maybe Wie can now give us something else to glance at, if not watch women’s golf.
