Orioles Lukewarm on Morneau
- Updated: August 18, 2013
The Baltimore Orioles are looking to beef up their lineup by adding a DH, and are planning on making multiple waiver claims, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. But their interest in Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has cooled according to a recent Rosenthal tweet.
In a late July article the Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles and Twins were having discussions about Morneau. But a big stumbling block is the $3.5 million still owed this season to the former American League MVP.
The Twins weren’t able to deal Morneau before the July 31 trade deadline, but were able to slip him through waivers without a claim. So they are now able to trade him, even though it is past the deadline.
Morneau is hitting .262 this season with 14 homers and 68 RBIs. He’s had three seasons in his career where he has hit over 30 home runs and four seasons where he has driven in over 100 runs, but neither have happened since 2009.
The Orioles were also rumored to have interest in infielder Mark Reynolds, but the Yankees were able to step in and beat the Orioles to Reynolds.
