Will Braves Follow Pastornicky’s Lead?
- Updated: May 14, 2014
Atlanta Braves lead-off man Jason Heyward was on the bench Wednesday afternoon against the Giants and left-handed starter Madison Baumgartner, so manager Fredi Gonzalez needed someone else to fill the lead-off role.
Second baseman Tyler Pastornicky not only filled the role, he excelled. Pastornicky had two hits and scored a run in the Braves game Wednesday against the Giants.
Heyward has struggled all season in the lead-off role, hitting just .205 with a .304 on base percentage.
Don’t get your hopes up that the change will be permanent, though.
Before the game against the Giants, Gonzalez said that Heyward would continue to bat lead-off against lefties. I think we can assume that means he will bat first against right-handed pitchers, too.
Gonzalez went on to say that he thinks Heyward is starting to come a little bit to life. That’s good news for Braves fans considering Heyward has pretty much been dead all season. Nice to know the carcass still has a pulse…
